Occupational Therapy

Childrens Occupational Therapy provides help and support for children and young people with a physical disability or those with practical, sensory, or motor differences which are affecting their ability to carry out everyday tasks at home, school and during play. Our aim here at The Muir Practice is to enable children and young people to participate as much as possible in everyday life by incorporating meaningful and purposeful activities throughout their day.

Children and young people may experience difficulties with the following:

Self-help skills – for example washing, dressing, tooth-brushing, using cutlery and toileting.

Motor skills – gross motor skills - for example running, jumping, hopping, balance and coordination activities. Improving hand/eye coordination for play and such as bat and ball activities or for copying from a board or projector.

Fine motor skills - for example grasping and releasing toys, picking up small objects, doing buttons and zips, holding a pencil, and typing.

Leisure – for example playing with friends and playing with toys. Learning social skills and managing behaviour.

Sensory processing – children and young people may experience differences with tactile processing (touch), auditory processing, (noise), gustatory, (taste), proprioception (deep pressure feedback), olfactory (smell), vestibular (sense of balance), and interoception, (internal senses i.e. feeling pain, temperature, hungry etc).

Our Occupational Therapist will work alongside families, nursery, and school staff to offer recommendations, advice and strategies that can be incorporated into a child or young person’s daily routine.

If you have concerns about any of the above and you feel you require support or advice, please contact Occupational Therapy and an initial consultation can be arranged.
