Does your child know what they want to say, but struggle to get the words out?
Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a motor speech disorder that affects a child’s ability to plan and coordinate the movements needed for speech.
Children with CAS know what they want to say, but their brain has difficulty sending the correct messages to the muscles used for speech. This can result in speech that is inconsistent, difficult to understand, or effortful.
Longer or more complex words are often harder to say, and children may appear to work very hard to speak. CAS is not caused by muscle weakness or lack of effort.
Speech and language therapy for CAS is structured and intensive. Therapy focuses on improving speech clarity through frequent, targeted practice and includes guidance for parents to support safe and effective practice at home.
